Background of the Study
Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, requiring rapid medical intervention to reduce mortality and improve patient outcomes. Emergency nurses play a crucial role in early stroke recognition, triage, and management, ensuring that patients receive timely and appropriate care (World Health Organization, 2024). Their ability to identify stroke symptoms, administer emergency interventions, and collaborate with neurologists significantly impacts patient survival and recovery rates (Aliyu & Usman, 2023).
In Nigeria, stroke cases are increasing due to factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and lifestyle changes. Kwara State, like many other regions, faces challenges in stroke management due to limited awareness, inadequate training of emergency healthcare providers, and delays in seeking medical attention (Bello et al., 2023). The effectiveness of stroke management depends largely on the knowledge and skills of emergency nurses, as early intervention—such as administering thrombolytic therapy or ensuring rapid transportation to specialized care—can significantly reduce disability and mortality rates (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).
Despite the critical role of emergency nurses in stroke management, there is limited research on their level of preparedness in Kwara State. This study aims to evaluate their knowledge, skills, and challenges in handling stroke cases, with the goal of improving emergency stroke care.
Statement of the Problem
Stroke remains a major health burden in Nigeria, yet many cases are not effectively managed due to delays in diagnosis, poor emergency response, and lack of specialized training for healthcare providers. Emergency nurses, who are often the first point of contact for stroke patients, must have adequate knowledge of stroke symptoms and appropriate interventions (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). However, studies indicate that many nurses in Nigeria lack sufficient training in stroke recognition and management, leading to delays in treatment and poor patient outcomes (Bello et al., 2024).
In Kwara State, hospitals may lack standardized stroke management protocols, further complicating emergency care. Without proper training and resources, emergency nurses may struggle to implement evidence-based stroke interventions, increasing the risk of disability and death among stroke patients (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). This study seeks to assess the competency of emergency nurses in stroke management and identify gaps that need to be addressed.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess emergency nurses' knowledge of stroke symptoms and early intervention strategies in Kwara State.
2. To evaluate the skills of emergency nurses in handling acute stroke cases.
3. To identify challenges faced by emergency nurses in stroke management and propose solutions.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of knowledge of emergency nurses regarding stroke symptoms and interventions?
2. How skilled are emergency nurses in handling stroke cases?
3. What are the major challenges emergency nurses face in managing stroke patients?
Research Hypotheses
1. Emergency nurses in Kwara State have inadequate knowledge of stroke symptoms and early interventions.
2. Limited training and resources negatively affect emergency nurses' ability to manage stroke cases.
3. Providing specialized training on stroke management will improve emergency nurses' competency in stroke care.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will be conducted in selected hospitals and emergency departments in Kwara State. Limitations may include variations in stroke management protocols and potential biases in self-reported competency levels.
Definition of Terms
• Stroke: A medical emergency caused by a disruption in blood flow to the brain, leading to brain cell damage.
• Thrombolytic Therapy: A treatment used to dissolve blood clots in ischemic stroke patients.
